Xuejuan returns to her old home—soon to be demolished—to bid farewell, haunted by a dream of the night Cai’e was taken for treatment and her unfinished lantern. The dream leaves her anxious. She finds the house empty, burns joss paper for Cai’e, and finally recalls: Cai’e died without a goodbye, the lantern left incomplete. Exhausted, Xuejuan falls asleep on the last bus home.
